Syracuse listens
note by note we measure time
Quarter by Quarter
For the “quarter century series” of the Syracuse Poster Project, I was most drawn to our shared appreciation of music in Syracuse. As Ms. Reed (multiple poet contributor) states in one of her narratives, I too believe that the process of writing a haiku is like a meditation.
In this instance, I was most drawn to the experience of being immersed in music (in all of my childhood music lessons and all throughout adult life).
I wanted to reflect our region’s steady march and persistence through time with words that would bring to mind the musical rhythms of life.
As a medical student, an important part of learning how to treat patients is learning how to listen to them. To help bring people comfort and healing, I am learning how to listen to their stories, not just their heartbeats. I chose Nancy’s poem for how it invited me to pause and listen with Syracuse.
The theme of “quarters” brought to my mind the keen differences in Syracuse’s seasons versus the historical buildings that stay the same through it all. My goal was to juxtapose those ideas with this poster, putting firm, photographed brick alongside fleeting, painted nature scenes of Central New York.
