Description

Don't stop there,

add another scoop.

More whipped cream,

and toss in some nuts,

make it one of my childhood dreams.

I think that for many children, their first experience of ordering food by themselves is ordering ice cream at the window of an ice cream shop. It is a feeling of power and control that they don’t experience very often in their lives.

The poem I wrote tries to capture the energy of that experience of making a choice of their own, to feel the thrill of having their desires met, to get overwhelmed by the giddiness of having someone follow their instructions. The recollection of that event exists as a memory that is very much like a remembered dream.

I’m really glad I chose Gannon’s as my subject for this poster. I went there all the time as a kid to get ice cream on hot summer nights. Sitting outside surrounded by community and staring up at a late sunset, that’s what I thought of when reading the poem.

The goal was for my poster to be fun, vibrant, and full of life, so I used bright pinks and yellows, along with multiple textures so the whole piece feels active. I got to experiment a lot with new digital painting techniques for this, and it was a lot of fun. I’m looking forward to making similar art in the future and using it to engage more with my community.
