Description

Through the heart chambers

—atria and ventricles—

flows humanity

Within every one of us are four heart chambers that empty and fill throughout our lives. We think of the heart as the origin of love, compassion, and courage, something at our core that can be broken, mended, and in modern medicine, replaced, but something we cannot be without.

For some poets, the thrumming rhythm of a heartbeat may convert to meter and rhyme; for others, iambs or free verse. A poet hears the pounding, lets the poem emerge, and puts it down on paper—which is the bottle for the lightning.

As my first Syracuse Poster Project illustration, I was hoping that I could select a poem that conjured the feeling of creating a tall hill and seeing one of many stunning views in our area. Meanwhile I hoped it would also manifest an image of how Syracuse is the beating heart of Central New York, both in natural beauty and iconic architecture.

The poem I selected instantly brought to mind the image of the beating heart of a city; with roadways replacing arteries and people replacing cells. Flowing from the heart of the valley comes life, humanity, spilling over University Hill, stretching to Green Lakes, and emanating from the center of downtown.
