During the day, I work with a healthcare team that helps folks to rehabilitate. That position is challenging; so I appreciate the different sort of mental exercise that poetry allows. I enjoy that I have a vision, but the readers create their own interpretation.
I’m also part of another team – one that advocates for animals – the sentient beings among us who often have no voice. Locally, they face much suffering, which we are trying to end. I gratefully incorporate animals and nature into my poetry. This year’s project had me thinking of compass points, seasons, and the CNY waters that flow through them all…
I was born and raised in Central New York, having spent the first five years of my life in the city of Syracuse itself. The landscape of Central New York has been a huge inspiration for my paintings, especially when it comes to our nature and wildlife.
When I first read this poem, I knew immediately that it was about Onondaga Lake. I was drawn to the imagery of the bald eagles, wanting that to be the main subject of the illustration. I allowed the lake to flow freely around the eagles, giving the piece a more graphic, yet simplistic quality.
