It made me whoop to see my bell bottom jeans
and Nehru shirt come boppin' out of Boom Babies
before I even left the parking lot.
When Boom Babies opened, it only sold vintage clothing. As a Baby Boomer myself, I loved going there in the 80’s. As I perused the racks, my mind traveled to my high school sewing class. I had made this mind-blowing (at least to me) paisley Nehru shirt. It looked groovy with my People’s Place bell bottom jeans.
When I saw the list for this year’s Poster Project, I had to pick Boom Babies. I had this vision of donating these bell bottoms and Nehru shirt and then seeing a young girl, resembling the hippy 1969 Ellen, come bopping out of the store, wearing what I had just dropped off before I even left the parking lot. It does make me whoop just to think about it.
Poetry and artwork endure, just like vintage clothing, transporting us to a memory; another time and place that remain forever inside us. Being selected for the Syracuse Poster Project is an honor and a dream come true. Thank you!
After spending a year in Syracuse, I have had the chance to immerse myself in the area’s scenic beauty and the vibrant local businesses, which really bring the community to life. One store that left a lasting impact on me was the Boom Babies store.
The bus I take to university every day, passes on the street where Boom Babies is located, and from the moment I first saw it, I was captivated. The store’s eclectic mix of vibrant gowns, dresses, and vintage clothing never fails to amaze me. Every time I pass by, it brings a smile to my face.
Ellen McCauley’s poem perfectly captures the essence of that energy, so when I was selecting a poem, I knew this was the one. I was inspired by the bold, colorful fashion posters of the 60’s while making this poster. The pop of color, dynamic patterns and the sheer energy of it were elements I wanted to capture. To complete the poster, I also draw inspiration from the psychedelic poster style, incorporating ornate and distorted lettering to amplify the playful spirit I wanted to express.
