Description

The city of clouds

crackling beats and worn-in streets

Brightened by a sound.

When I saw that The Sound Garden was a choice to write a poem about, I knew I needed to leap on the opportunity. The Sound Garden brings me joy and you can typically find me scavenging through the dollar records. Music has a massive role in the Syracuse community and I wanted to incorporate that into my poem.

After living in Syracuse for five years, I have given the city the nickname of “The City of Clouds” for somehow always being cloudy when surrounding areas are not. Even though the city may seem cold and dreary to an outsider, it is actually filled with warmth and creativity. The Sound Garden is a hub for this life and allows musicians and music lovers to connect and listen, the crackling beats of The Sound Garden brightens hearts throughout Syracuse. Especially mine.

Of all the poems, I chose what resonated most – it felt like Syracuse, like The Sound Garden itself. Music breathes life into the city, just as this local institution does for the community. I wanted to capture that spirit visually – a true “garden of sound,” where speakers bloom, foliage hums with melody, and a city drifts among the clouds. At its roots, vibrant sound waves pulse, feeding the scene with energy. Hand-drawn in Procreate, this piece transforms sound into something visible, just as The Sound Garden transforms music into an experience.
