Description

gentle morning rain
morning's hopscotch washed away
girls dance in puddles

Twenty years ago, poetry found and saved me. Writing poems is like transcribing, listening to my muse weave words into a tapestry of images, feelings, sensations, and thoughts. This haiku is a composite of memories and things I love—the glory of summers in Central New York, listening to rain, the joy of watching my girls create and play. Like hopscotch washed away by rain, life is more bittersweet with each passing year of my life.

Syracuse has become a home for me, especially Westcott Street. I knew I wanted to show it in my illustration since it's so special. I picked the haiku because I felt like it was one that everyone could relate with as it could've happened anywhere in Syracuse.

My process for the illustration was entirely digital and drawn on my iPad. My push of perspective was a way to show Wescott in a way that it maybe hasn't been shown before. The perspective also allows the viewers to create their own identities for the girls in the image.
