Description

Fluffy, fat flakes fall
City's heart shimmers with light
Life in a snow globe.

I spent several years as a volunteer usher at the Civic Center. The Gifford Series, the symphony and Famous Artists were my favorite performances. I was often in downtown Syracuse on winter nights. I had Clinton Square in mind when I wrote this haiku. The lighted tree, the snowflakes gently falling and catching the glow of the streetlights and the black velvet sky all combined to create a beautiful scene. Winter nights in Central New York are magic.

I've been ice skating at Clinton Square a few times, and it's pretty nice. It reminds me of wintertime and the holidays. I like that it's enclosed by very iconic buildings and the monument, and as you're skating around the ice rink when the Christmas tree's there, you get a 360-degree view of downtown. When I read this poem, I immediately had a clear image of Clinton Square in the winter in a snow globe. To get details of the buildings and the monument, I looked at some pictures online, and I thought that in addition to the people inside the snow globe enjoying themselves, it would be kind of nice to have people outside experiencing that enjoyment as well. Ultimately, I wanted to have a lot of detail, but not make it so busy that you can't tell what was going on.
