Long Yellow Buses

poster information

Description

long yellow buses
laughter on small snowy feet
winter school awakes

This poem, and some of the others I've submitted, was written while I was at school. I'm a teacher at the Southside Academy Charter School. Every morning and afternoon, I'm one of the teachers who go outside and stand by the buses, making sure the children come and go safely. They tend to want to run and throw snowballs.

The staff gets there early, and we walk around with our coffee mugs, bleary eyed, getting ready for the day. When the buses arrive, and the children get off, suddenly there's a lot of laughter and small, snowy feet going by. The school wakes up quickly.

There were a few poems I liked, but this one caught my eye because it reminded me of my positive experience working in the Syracuse community though SU's Literacy Corps. I tutored pre-k and kindergarten at Dr. King Elementary and McKinley-Brighton for the past two summers.

I spent the majority of my time reading with the students, doing art projects, and making myself available for any tasks needed. It was a rewarding experience that I shall continue to cherish for the rest of my lifetime.

One of the best aspects of working with the children was their ability to make every moment enjoyable. With my illustration I strove to portray the exact instance where the fun, quirky attitudes of my young students could shine through. The finished piece always reminds me of the good times I had working in the classroom. It brings a smile to my face every time.
