I chose to depict Sarah Loguen & her father, Reverend Jermain Loguen, not only for their profound impact on our city (& nation’s) history, but also for how strongly their bond resonated with me. I myself have a strong connection to my father. I know that as an artist, my successes are largely due to the support my father has shown me throughout my entire life, as a child, and now into adulthood.

To see such a strong display of parental support leading to historical greatness, on many fronts, is an example that deserves celebration & recognition.

This poster design was inspired greatly by one of the most bonding rituals from my childhood – writing grocery to-do lists with my mother at the kitchen table. She would always adorn her lists with little hearts.

The Syracuse Cooperative Market has served to bring much joy and love into my life, from offering rainbow produce in a food dessert, to the kindness of Co-op staff. I’m honored to depict such a valuable and beloved Syracuse business.

I chose this poem because it resonated most for me as a relevant cultural statement. I find I seek to make art that is not only beautiful in color and composition, but that also compels consideration.

For me, the disparity between modern Syracuse and the ancient wisdom of this land and its native peoples is the most relevant conversation we could have.

It is one that applies to the world at large. The matrilineal wisdom of indigenous peoples and their connection to earth is what will remedy our dismal future. We must remember. This poem, this poster, remembers the women that came before us.

The women that paid every price to grant themselves and future generations access to sovereignty.
